Born and reared in Starkville, Mississippi, Joe attended The University of Mississippi, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Accountancy in 1974, and a Juris Doctor in 1978. Joe completed requirements to become a Certified Public Accountant in 1976, and in 1978 he moved to Houston and joined the firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co.
Joe joined Larry Maddox in 1985, and together started the accounting firm of Maddox Thomson & Associates, P.C. In 1988, he completed the requirements to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER ™certificant. With the founding of Horizon Advisors in 1999, Joe and Larry were able to add investment planning and investment management services to their financial planning services. In 2008 Joe was accepted as a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA). Joe's focus at both Maddox, Thomson & Associates and Horizon Advisors is client relationships, business development, and income and estate tax planning.
Married to the former Anne Sewell, Joe has three sons who were born in Houston. Joe is an active member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church, serving on its Vestry and as Junior Warden. Joe is also a member of the Houston Country Club. In the past, Joe served in various capacities on the Board of Directors, as an Officer, and as a Coach in the Post Oak Pony and Little Leagues.

A third generation Houstonian and graduate of Lamar High School, Larry attended the University of Texas at Austin. He received his BA in Economics in 1975 and an MBA with a concentration in finance and accounting in 1977. After graduation, Larry worked for Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co. and Deloitte & Touche, two former "Big 8" accounting firms. While there, he performed audit and tax work and earned his CPA. He then left public accounting to become controller of a small, family-owned and run oil and gas service firm.
In 1981, Larry formed his own CPA firm and in 1985, Joe Thomson joined him to create Maddox Thomson & Associates, P.C. (MTA ). Larry became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ in 1988. Several years later, in 1999, Larry and Joe formed Horizon Advisors, LLC. In 2007, Larry was accepted for membership in the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA).
Larry works with clients in all facets of the wealth management process. His involvement includes helping clients to define their personal goals and objectives and strategic planning. He collaborates with our team of professionals and other strategic partners to provide income and estate tax planning, investment portfolio design and implementation, legacy and planned giving advice and to address other client-specific concerns.
Larry married his high school sweetheart, Donna Magill, in 1975 and they have one daughter. Larry is a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and the Houston Country Club. He has been active in a number of local charities, including the American Cancer Society, The Kinkaid School and the Houston Texans Charity Golf Classic. In his free time Larry enjoys spending time with his family and playing golf.
